But What Is Halal?
‘Halal’ is an Arabic word which means ‘permissible’ in English. It is a religious law in Islam, which strictly dictates the dietary rules for Muslims. Generally, almost all foods are considered Halal unless dictated otherwise, which is called Haram. For food to be considered Halal, it must be stored and manufactured using machinery and equipment that has been cleansed according to Islamic law. It must also not contain any ingredients considered prohibited. The only exception to this is pork, which is strictly considered Haram and must not be consumed by Muslims regardless of the manufacturing process.
In the context of pick n mix sweets, the common culprit for Haram food is due to the inclusion of gelatine in the manufacturing process. If the sweets have been not been manufactured using processes that have been cleansed by Islamic law then it is not considered Halal; likewise, if the sweet contains specifically pork gelatine that it is, again, considered unsuitable for Muslims.

Firstly, it is worth noting that all of our vegan pick and mix sweets are considered Halal as they do not contain any animal produce. Just look out for the green ‘V’ symbol next to our sweets to indicate they are vegan friendly.
